Anniversary goodness

Today is our first anniversary. This time last year, I was decorating the reception. It seems like so long ago and at the same time like yesterday. Today's also Easter, so we kind of celebrated yesterday. We went on a picnic and to a fancy dinner. We bought a bottle of champagne and exchanged gifts. Joseph loved his Kindle, score for me. Joseph still won, though. He made me a card and bought me emerald earrings. He also had a small cake made to look like our wedding cake. And I cried this year just like I cried last; only this time no one had to listen to me try to choke out my vows. The thought of spending the rest of my life with this man brings a ridiculously stupid smile to my face. And the best part is he loves me every bit as much as I love him.We have our whole lives ahead of us. We won't be in Tallahassee next year. I don't know where we'll be. It's incredibly exciting, and I can't wait to share it all with this amazing man.

Anyway, today's Easter. I think Joseph's brother may come over. We're going to dye eggs and watch the Ten Commandments. And probably be all lovey and smoochy.

Caught My Eye: Katie-Beth

love
So this weekend, I went to Jacksonville to see Katie-Beth. It's kinda like detox and I really needed it. We had a blast, as always, just hanging out. We didn't do much, but we never do. We attempted to see a concert, but ended up getting lost and soaked to the bone. No aquarium, only pet shops. And even the beach was kinda crappy. Thankfully, I don't go to Jacksonville for any of those things! So here are some things in honor of Katie-Beth (Christmas ideas, perhaps?)

Caught My Eye )

Things that remind me of Katie: well, she lives in Jacksonville and likes football. Why is this important? Because we, in Tallahassee, see more Jacksonville games than she does. CBS and Fox, who broadcast the day games on Sunday, have blackout clauses in their broadcast contracts. If a stadium doesn't sell a certain percentage of seats, the network reserves the right to show another game in that market. And Jacksonville, for whatever reason, has no love for their team that goes to the playoffs every year. They don't sell out, so their home games don't air in Jacksonville. Making this Jaguar footstool about as apropos as they come.

(left) Jaguar footstool: Etsy                                                               (right) Felt Bunny iPod Cozy: Etsy

(center) Magic Frog Soap: Plum Party
Katie doesn't have the best of luck when it comes to men, unfortunately. She has to kiss a lot of frogs. I told her to plant herself in a Starbucks and look for a nice business student. They have schedules they have to adhere to, garaunteeing her date time. AND they're more likely to make a buck later on down the line. She has yet to heed my advice. Also, she has a bunny. And an iPod. But it's a shuffle. So it would just fall out of this case. But it's still cute.

(left) Electric Marshmallow Toaster: Wishing Fish                  (right) Dinotopia: Amazon

(center) Porcelain Milk Jug: Hay

Some possible Christmas ideas? Unfortunately, the marshmallow toaster is out of stock. But seriously, that's awesome. The middle is a porcelain milk jug from Europe. I have no idea how much it costs in American Dollars. I suck. But Katie does ceramics and I've been begging her to open a shop or something. So I guess it wouldn't make much sense to buy her even more ceramics for her house. But seriously. That's awesome. And last but not least: Dinotopia. It was an awful miniseries on ABC when we were in high school. And one year for Christmas, Katie bought me the video. Apparently there are books. Haha! Right back at ya!</div></div>

sound advice from Indy'08

Wise words of advice from Indecision 2008:

With Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and even that crappy Enterprise show on DVD, Trek fans don't have much time to venture into, much less pay attention to, the outside world. With that in mind, here is a list of things for Trekkies to remember when they don their Spock ears and head out to participate in the democracy ritual on Election Day:

* Federation club "rank" will not get you any special treatment at the polling place.

* You may not sign in with the registrar in Klingon.

* Comparing Barack Obama to Mr. Tuvok makes you an intergalactic racist.

* Do not ask the voting official to make the "swoosh" sound when you enter the booth.

* The chances of being split in two due to a "voting booth accident" are extremely slim.

* Scott Bakula is not a good write-in for any spot on any ticket.

* Joe Biden is running for Vice President, not "Number One."

* Sarah Palin is the Borg Queen.

* You cannot vote to allow Vulcans to mate more often.

* Do not say "Make it so!" out loud when you're done voting.

spontaneous weekend

kissy
so we had loose plans for labor day weekend before hurricane/tropical storm/thunder cloud Fay hit. we were gonna stay in Tallahassee and go to a park or have a picnic or something. BUT the storm last weekend  put pretty much anything worth doing in Tallahassee underwater. so we were looking at a pretty dull weekend. then friday, joseph does a little research and discovers that six flags is cheap. and it's only four-five hours away. we find a cheap hotel online and the kennel actually had room for potus. so saturday morning we set off for atlanta. it was a nice little drive, we took state roads about halfway till we hit I-75. we even went to a little antique mall and i bought some new additions to my postcard collection. we got to the hotel around 5 or 6 saturday night. we went in search of food and ended up at hooters, which worked out well because they had the 'bama-clemson game on (clemson was ranked 9th? seriously? not anymore they're not).

sunday we slept in a little and went to six flags. we had a lot of fun. six flags is licensed with warner brothers, so they had a lot of DC superhero stuff, which was cool. i got a bat-cape, which was awesome. i wore it all over the park. i'll probably give it to donovan, i know he'd get a HUGE kick out of it. we also rode the superman ride. here's the description off the website (it was also in the map): "Face down fear-face first as you fly above Georgia at super speed—just like the man of steel, Superman." We did not realize the description was quite so literal. 'fly'? 'face first'? 'face down'??? you ride on your stomach. like you're flying. joseph's afraid of heights, and i have this thing about floorless rollercoasters. i'm ALWAYS scared i'm gonna fall out. i know i won't. but i'm little, and i've never been on a roller coaster where the shoulder/chest bar-harness-thingy has come down all the way. i shake around in the seats and it really scares me. but joseph wanted to ride superman, so i figured i could suck it up once. and we're waiting to get on the next go and watching the other people get strapped in. joseph comments 'that's funny, they have ankle braces. why would you need ankle braces.' then the floor pulls away and all the seats rotate 90 degrees so that instead of sitting up, you're laying down. and we both get a terror-struck look in our eyes. but we're here, so we should give it a go. not gonna lie, my eyes were closed for half the ride. as the crazy-old knight says at the end of indiana jones: we chose.... poorly. whoa man. after that we had to shake it off a little and ride some cupcake rides. like the carousel. we also rode the country's longest wooden rollercoaster. which was also not so awesome. i've ridden wooden roller coasters before, but this one was really rough on my back and neck. but we had a really great time at the park. it was nice for just the two of us. we spent a good six hours there. and we got to split a funnel cake. oh and i got a little something for my dad and katie. and of course the cape for me/donovan.

after the park we took a nap. then we went in search of food again. Randy suggested going to The Varsity, which incindentally Joseph saw on a Food channel thing about hot dogs. so we got chili dogs, yum! we also met up with kelly and dan, who were in town for dragoncon. we got some tasty dessert and went back to their hotel to walk around and look at the costumes a little. it was alright. like an early halloween. it's fun to look at, but it's just not worth the money for me. but it was really nice getting to see kelly (have you lost more weight since the wedding? joseph and i were debating).

monday morning we checked out and came back to tallahassee. the ride was nice and easy, and relatively uneventful. we played some video games when we got home and got a pizza (two, actually, since they botched the first one) and rented 'smart people' which was cute. it was such a great weekend. it was really nice just joseph and i getting away, driving together, being goofy. just very us. we talked about a lot of stuff, too. i'll say more when things start to take shape a bit better. i have LOTS of pictures, but apparently there was a problem uploading them. so i have to try again tonight. but for now, the mail's here, which means i have real work to do (YAY!! . . . no, seriously, YAY. i love you guys, but i would absolutely rather have work to do than screw around on the internet)

why upgrading sucks

ninja
here's the skinny: boss's laptop won't charge anymore. we buy a new one. a new one with xp still on it (and before anyone says ANYTHING, yes we use PCs. we're a law firm. we type documents, we use spreadsheets, we don't need macs). but we can't get around office 2007. that's ok, though, becuase office 2007 allows you to save documents in a 2003 format, so the files will still be compatable with our three other computers. but i didn't anticipate our other software not being able to work with office 2007.

we use this awesome program by lexis nexis called Time Matters. it's fully integrated with everything we do, makes the files much more comprehensive, and integrates with office so we save directly out of whatever program we're working in. we have TM7, right now, they're on TM9 and are upgrading in the next year to TM10. but there's nothing that TM10 does that we need and can't already do in TM7. cherry on top would be if it was compatible with an iPhone, but it doesn't look like it's going to be. TM7 won't connect to Office 2007. and there's no support for it. if we pay $640 we can talk to a technician, who can't garauntee that they'll be able to make it work. or we can pay $900 to upgrade. why would we upgrade software that works just fine. the only, and i mean ONLY reason we bought the new laptop is because you literally could not turn the old one on!! my computer at home is pushing six years old. i swear i'm going to be holed up with it in a trench somewhere with people banging down my door demanding that i upgrade. cuz lord knows i can't afford a mac.

p.s. i've gotten runs in two pairs of hose this week. bugger.

i'm off to scour google in hopes of an answer

Caught My Eye: Phoenix

It occured to me today, I spend a lot of time doing nothing on the internet. And occassionally, I find interesting little things. So I'm gonna start putting all those interesting little things here. It might have rhyme and reason to it, or it might not. I haven't decided yet. But! It'll give me something to do with my time. Here we go:

As I've been struggling against the idea of being a 'victim' or being a 'survivor' the image of a phoenix remains constant. I don't harbour any grand illusions in my mind of being a great mythical firebird, but the image intrigues me nonetheless. The Phoenix was always a favorite fantasy creature of mine and the symbolism certainly seems to fit where I am right now.

we went to see batman this weekend. i was pleasantly surprised (that's saying something). i liked it WAY better than batman begins. i liked batman begins, but i had a lot of issues and some disappointment with batman begins. but this one? wowie. my two complaints? christian bale's batman voice still sucks. it's more consistent this time, but consistently sucky. and i miss the danny elfman score. this one's not bad, per se. but it's bland. bruce timm and paul dini took danny elfman's score for tim burton's batman and adapted it for B:TAS, why can't christopher nolan do the same? seriously, he should look into it.

i just can't say enough good things about this movie. like katie holmes wasn't in it! there's a good thing! it felt very batman and that in and of itself was refreshing. i especially liked the crash scene in the lamborghini - very bruce wayne. i'm a little concerned about the obsession with cutting gotham off (they did it in begins, too). no man's land was not that great a story. in fact it was kinda wierd and i'd really rather not see it become a movie. please? but christopher nolan did seem to pull up a little on batman's dark side, which was refreshing. i love frank miller, and batman: year one, but i'm really not crazy about the alcoholic psycopath in dark knight returns, which, after begins, i was afraid was where christopher nolan was heading.

all in all, this was probably the second best comic book adaptation i've ever seen (sin city being the first). -side note: they're making watchmen into a movie?!? how cool is that!- the big question now is where does christopher nolan go from here? i'd love love love to see a bane movie, but it doesn't seem that his universe is quite ripe enough for that. although i still contend that a knightfall movie would not only be ridiculously badass, it would also fit perfectly into christopher nolan's more realistic bat-world. so here is my small list of possibilities: i'd like to see a love story with talia al ghul, perhaps even with the mention of a lazarus pit and the return of ra's al ghul? i'd like to see the ventriloquist, if only in a secondary role. he was always pretty funny. i'd like to see the introduction of harvey bullock to the police force. i think a man-bat story would be very plausible for christopher nolan's bat-world. and i'd really like to see harley quinn; i think it'd make a great movie focused on arkham, but i'm not sure how i'd feel about recasting heath ledger.

and that was my batman jam.
